Game On: The Best New Jersey Arcades!

The 80s, my teen years, I remember spending so much time at the NJ arcade near me. It was called the Ritz (I think) and was right next to the Amboy Cinemas in Sayreville, New Jersey. I spent many a Friday or Saturday night hanging at the arcade and then the movie or vice versa. Those were fun times and they were the perfect place for teens to hang out.

Sadly, both the arcade and movie theater have been closed for years, but every time I drive past them on the Garden State Parkway those memories come rushing back. Many of the classic video game arcades of the 80s have closed and some closed in the last few years. BUT NJ arcades are making a comeback.

I am so here for those comebacks! A game room at home just isn’t the same as hanging in an arcade, there are no flashing lights, no ringing machines, and no prize redemption booth.

When the weather outside is too hot, too cold, or too rainy NJ arcades provide an alternative way to have fun. Playing video games at an arcade is one of my favorite indoor activities in New Jersey. I admit I always get a little giddy when I can find my favorite classic video games or skeeball among the more modern games.

Today’s arcades in New Jersey provide family entertainment for everyone in the family. From claw machines filled with plushies, electronic gadgets, balls, and more to virtual reality VR games that let you race against family members and friends, from hoop games to ride on motorcycles, from air hockey to pinball, NJ arcades have games for all ages.

NJ Arcades Near Me

About our guide to New Jersey Arcades

It’s always been our goal at Jersey Family Fun to create guides that are as thorough as possible. No matter where you are in New Jersey, if you’re searching for ‘arcades near me’ we trust that you will find this guide helpful. We’ve sorted our guide to NJ arcades to list them by region, county, and then town.

While we’ve prioritized listing the best arcades and the largest arcades across New Jersey, we also break out a section of arcades at the Jersey Shore, on and off the boardwalk, as well as NJ attractions with arcades.

We break down each arcade by telling you where it’s located, if the arcade is open year-round or seasonally, if they have classic games like Donkey Kong, Pacman, Galaga, pinball, or new games like virtual reality (VR) ones. When possible we’ll also let you know if these indoor arcades also offer laser tag, air hockey, redemption booth, mini-golf, and go-karts, or other special features.

Some NJ arcades have paid for an upgraded featured listing in this guide to NJ arcades. Others received a complimentary basic listing. If your arcade is interested in being listed here please contact [email protected].

Quick Tips for Visiting a NJ Arcade

  • Always double-check the hours before visiting one of these NJ arcades. While we’ll work hard to keep this updated, hours can change with the season, holidays, shortage of employees, etc. Avoid disappointments or showing up to locked doors by verifying through the arcade’s website or social media pages their current hours. Call if you need to.
  • Pay attention to how payment works at these arcades in New Jersey. Some are old school and take tokens, so you’ll need cash. Others will not take cash and will only use a card system.
  • More than one kid? Plan ahead. Will each kid get their own game card or will they share?
  • How long will you stay? Some arcades charge not by the game, but by the hour. It can be a great way to save money. Check into the pricing and see which entry pass makes the most sense for your family and then plan accordingly.
  • Hungry? Talk to the kids ahead of time about snacks and meals. Some arcades sell food. That can be convenient or it could be a source of temptation. ;-)

Final Thoughts on NJ Arcades

It was so much fun putting together this list of NJ arcades near me. It was so rewarding as well. I thought those classic arcades of my youth were gone, but doing this research I see they’re not. YAY!

I also see where I need to find YOU arcades in New Jersey. This guide will be updated often and I encourage you to comment below with your suggestions for arcades we may have missed or don’t have complete information for.

There are so many New Jersey arcades to explore. We’ve been to Fundaes Arcade, iPlay America, Dave & Busters, a Funplex, and a handful of others. I can’t wait to visit the rest.

Which NJ arcades have you visited? Which one will you visit next?
